Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
