Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
