Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several entry passages leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their bravery," Healey said. "Including them were numerous UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
