Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed view of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies represent an existential risk to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual danger facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, about 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening economic gap stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, which limits the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper Europe. A US startup can launch a product under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to propose substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant advantages: high-quality workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
